メタリカやスレイヤーに始まるスラッシュメタル全盛に、１６歳になるジミーはギターヒーローを目指してギターを弾く。ジミーの家は貧しく、くすねた金やマックのバイトで貯めたお金を使ってギターを買った。
世の中にはすごい奴らがいた。ＭＴＶで見る、ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズにモトリー・クルー。派手で華やかなショーをやるやつも居れば、神懸かった早弾きをするイングヴェイなどもいた。そんな中で、ジミーは負けないように努力を重ねる。
もとよりジミーにはこれしかない。とにかく練習量を増やして、どうにかするしかなかった。あこがれのギターヒーローになるしかなかった。しかし、ジミーはこだわりが強い男だった。ジミーの才能に惚れ込んで集まったバンドメンバーもジミーの性格とそりがあわず、すぐに居なくなってしまった。
理想と現実のギャップに絶望するジミー。いつしか金も底をつき、バイトで食いつなぐ日々だったが、次第に酒へとおぼれていく。
そんなある日、たまたまジミーの演奏を聞いた有名なプロデューサーが、ジミーに興味を持ち、ジミーに演奏を頼む。スタジオの一室でジミーはギターを持つ。いつしかジミーが初めてギターを持った日から10年の歳月が過ぎていた。ハードロックの趨勢も変わってきていた。
ジミーの目指したハードロックやメタルは冬の時代を迎え、今はグランジとオルタナが全盛だ。ギターを聞いてプロデューサーは言い放つ。「だめだ。もっとカートみたいなフレーズを弾けよ」ジミーはいなくなるプロデューサーへ追すがるが、そのままプロデューサーは立ち去った。
失意のジミーはますます酒がひどくなり、ドラッグにもおぼれるようになる。
それでもジミーはギターをやめられず、誰もバンドメンバーが集まらない中、自分の追求するギターが弾けるように、とにかく早く、とにかく早くと練習を続けていった。
さらに数年の月日が流れた。ジミーはバイト先や、残った親戚などから借りれるだけ金を借りて、アルバムの制作に取りかかった。それでも金は足りず、スタジオを借りる時間の都合上、一発録りで、ドラムもないベースもいないスタジオ録音のライブアルバムを作るしかなかった。
そんなドラッグと酒浸りのジミーがどうにかもがいて作り上げたライブアルバム。それは傑作と呼ぶに値する、黄金に例えられるほどのギターの唸る1枚だった。
しかしそれは限界を超えて薬を服用した、すなはちドーピングをして得たものだった。
やがてこの時のオーバードーズが原因で、ジミーはほどなくして死んだ。伝説になったのだ。
ジミーのアルバムはカルト的な人気を誇り、幻の作品となったが、当人はそれを知ることはない。
幻のステージの上、ジミーは黄金色の客席を幻視しながら、幕が下りるのを満足げに眺めるのだった。
